Saint Pius X Elementary School in Montville is closing after today's final classes.
Today is the last day ever for the over 100 students and 20 teachers at the pre-K through eighth-grade school.
The school is being shut down.
Parents are upset the school is closing, but infuriated at how it all went down.
They say they were only told Tuesday night.
“I'm devastated,” says Kate Baron. “I'm mostly devastated for the teacher and the principal we just brought on. I have four children, three of whom were supposed to be in elementary school, an additional child entering in another year. So I would have had four kids in the school for the 2020 year.
Parents knew the school's declining enrollment meant it was in financial difficulty and agreed to a $1,000 per student tuition increase in April to keep the school afloat.
But now they are looking for new schools for September.
The backlash from the school closing extends to the parish.
Many parents who sent their kids to school are saying they will quit as parishioners and attend church somewhere else.
“I've been here for 45 years,” says Sandy Krauland. “I was baptized at this church. They're going to turn my back, turn their back on my family? Why?”
News 12 has reached out to the Paterson Diocese for their comment on the closing of the school, but have yet to hear back.
News 12 also went up to the church office and told the church has no comment.
The pastor was also not there.
