A car that crashed and veered off the road killed a mother and injured her 6-year-old son as they stood at the bus stop at Remsen and Seaview avenues Tuesday night, police say.
Authorities identified the woman as Shaena Sinclair, a 33-year-old from Canarsie. They say her son suffered critical injuries to the head.
Police say two cars, a 1999 Toyota 4 Runner and a 2013 Honda Accord, were traveling east on Seaview Avenue just before 10 p.m. They both attempted left-hand turns and collided.
The Honda's driver, a 21-year-old man, lost control and rolled up the sidewalk, striking the victims.
Police say both drivers remained on the scene and no arrests have been made. Witnesses say both of them had attempted to beat a traffic light at the intersection.
Both Sinclair and her son were taken to Brookdale Hospital. She was later pronounced dead. The boy remains listed in critical but stable condition.
"She was a sweetheart, a loving person," says Camille Edwards, Sinclair's cousin. "She worked for the homeless."
Commuters who take the B17 bus from the Remsen and Seaview stop say they want speed bumps or cameras installed to prevent future tragedies.
But state transportation officials say the intersection does not qualify for speed cameras under state law because it's too far from the nearest school.
Pearlina Rainford, another Canarsie resident, says there are other safety measures the city can take.
"A stop light would be good going down Seaview," she says. "You have the park right there, and you have children and the elderly going across."
