A Long Island man who police say was wanted after allegedly firing a shot at a family's home has died following a confrontation with police in New Jersey.
Officials say Todd Gregory, 47, had a dispute with a homeowner in Middle Island, New York, and was allegedly harassing the man and his family on Friday. A press release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office says that Gregory “raced back and forth in his vehicle in front of the home and fired a gunshot toward the home, striking a vehicle.”
Police say a 15-year-old boy was hit in the chest and arm by pieces of flying debris. He's is expected to be OK.
Following that incident, a police alert stated that Gregory was armed with several weapons, was reported to be suicidal, and had planned to engage with law enforcement.
According to the attorney general, New Jersey State Police troopers attempted to pull Gregory over when he was spotted on Route 80 in Knowlton Township Friday, but he did not stop.
Troopers then followed him a neighborhood in Hardwick Township, where they lost sight of his white pickup truck.
After a search, they found the pickup truck in a secluded area and began to approach the vehicle. That’s when police say a gunshot was heard within the vehicle. A trooper then fired multiple rounds into Gregory’s vehicle.
Gregory was found inside the pickup truck with a fatal gunshot wound. Two rifles were also recovered from his vehicle.
No troopers were injured.
New Jersey officials say the incident remains under investigation.
