Community members are rallying behind a Highland Park man who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement this week.
Cloyd Edralin, a Filipino immigrant, was arrested at 6 a.m. Monday outside of his house while he was headed to work.
Residents stood on the steps of the Reformed Church of Highland Park in support of Edralin's wife Brandi and the couple's three daughters.
Brandi says she couldn't believe it when her husband called her saying he had been detained. She says Cloyd was told he was being held for a conviction in 2007 when he was found with an air gun in his car during a traffic stop.
"Out of nowhere for this to come up and for him to be held in detention while it is sorted out is unconscionable," Brandi said.
Pastor Seth Kaper Dale put together the rally and says ICE is punishing "people for past mistakes that have already been paid in full."
In response, ICE said "Cloyd Tolentino Edralin, a citizen and national of the Philippines, is removable based on his felony conviction for possession of a handgun. He is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings."
Edralin is being held in a detention center in Elizabeth. His attorney is trying to get him a bond hearing, but his family is told that could take at least a month.
