Family of teen who got trapped under truck 'optimistic' for recovery

The family of a Bridgeport teen who got trapped under a pickup truck drive while driving a scooter says they're "optimistic" that he'll make a full recovery.
Police say a red Chevy Silverado driven by 20-year-old Christopher Kowalski, of Easton, failed to grant the right of way and struck 19-year-old Ezave Trojanowski at Huntington Turnpike and Virginia Avenue. It happened around 3 p.m. Thursday.
Police say the teen was pinned under the vehicle for about 30 minutes.
The family says the teen was transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery at St. Vincent's Medical Center to relieve pressure on his brain and to repair massive damage to the right side of his body. They say Trojanowski was originally given a 50-50 chance of survival, but is now expected to pull through. The victim's uncle says doctors are optimistic he will be able to live a totally normal life following his recovery.
Trojanowski's family describes him as a fighter and hard worker who was enjoying a day off when he was hit.
Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says brake failure in the pickup truck may have played a role in the accident, but it's too early to know if charges will be filed against the driver.
