The annual parade of ships arrived in New York's harbor Wednesday for the start of Fleet Week.
About 2,300 sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman arrived in New York City and Long Island on Navy and Coast Guard vessels.
Crowds of spectators lined the Hudson River as the procession cruised in. This year it included some of the Navy's newest ships, including the USS Arlington, named in commemoration of the 9/11 terror attacks, which struck New York City and the Pentagon, which is in Arlington, Virginia.
The seven-day spectacle first appeared in 1935 to offer a firsthand look at America's seaborne military.
This year, in addition to boat tours and live performances, there will be a focus on servicewomen from Long Island. Roughly 20 percent of Navy members are women.
Among them is Lt. Carley Tadlock, a 27-year-old Islip Terrace native who helmed the USS Arlington into New York Harbor Wednesday.
