Jersey City expands downtown pedestrian plaza

Jersey City's Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza has been expanded.
The outdoor area on Newark Avenue has been extended about two blocks, from Erie Street to Barrow Street.
The new section of the pedestrian mall was painted green Monday, and large planters, tables and chairs were put in place.
The goal is to attract more families, customers and new businesses.
"There are a lot of people downtown, a very dense area in Jersey City,” says Brian Platt, Jersey City business administrator. “There is a lot of businesses and activities. It’s a way to promote and enhance activities already going on, and a place that's craving more gathering space and pedestrian friendly areas."
The expansion is temporary.
After 60 days, the city will request feedback before deciding whether to make it permanent.
