Powerful thunderstorms caused lots of damage, disrupted travel and left thousands of residents without power across New Jersey.

The storms moved across the Garden State Tuesday afternoon and evening with winds around 70 mph in some areas. Those powerful winds uprooted trees and broke off branches in many towns, as well as damaged utility lines.

New Jersey’s utility companies reported over 105,000 customers without power at the peak of the storm.

Trees also fell onto several homes in New Jersey. A tree fell onto a home in Scotch Plains Tuesday evening, trapping the resident inside. Neighbors say that the older woman was not injured but had to be escorted out by first responders.

Tuesday’s evening commute was heavily impacted by the storm. Trees fell across many roads in the state, causing delays and closures. New Jersey Transit service was also disrupted. A tree fell across some tracks, canceling service on the Montclair-Boonton line for a time.

A Rutherford resident tells News 12 New Jersey that a tree fell on the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Passaic Road, barely missing her car as she drove home.

Police departments around the state were advising residents to stay indoors as much as possible while the storms moved through the area.

The storms mostly subsided by Tuesday night. Weather conditions overnight were expected to be cloudy, with some light rain.
