The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday designated the Coney Island Boardwalk as a scenic landmark.

The 2.7-mile stretch, also known as Riegelmann Boardwalk, was unveiled 95 years ago. It is named after former Borough President Edward J. Riegelmann, who was instrumental in creating the boardwalk.

"That's what makes this designation so important," says City Councilman Mark Treyger. "Landmark status ensures that, no matter what, there will always be a Coney Island Boardwalk."

The designation is not yet final. City Council and the mayor must sign off on it to make the decision permanent. That is expected to happen within the next few months.
