Toms River is in the final stages of buying out a motel that's been deemed a nuisance by the community.
The township will spend more than $3 million to buy the Red Carpet Inn on Water Street.
Officials hope the change will clean up crime downtown and attract more developers to Toms River.
"Whenever it's operated as a hotel, it attracts undesirables and there has been a ton of criminal activity going on here, and the police has been monitoring for a long time,” says Alizar Zorojew with Toms River Business Improvement. “I can even point, just over your right shoulder, there's a camera in the building across the street that's been there for more than five years that is a direct line to the Toms River Police Department for them to keep an eye on this corner."
The executive director of Downtown Toms River says the plan is to demolish the building and replace it with a berm to help mitigate river flooding in the area.
