Secaucus police say that a Jersey City mother left her baby in locked, hot car while she went into a store to use the bathroom.
Police say that officers were at the shopping center on Mill Creek Drive for another call Friday afternoon when they noticed the 1-year-old boy inside a white BMW station wagon. Officers said that the windows were rolled up and the car was off. It was about 81 degrees in Secaucus at the time.
One of the officers apparently knocked on the window and saw that the baby did not respond. Police say that the child was sweating. One of the officers was about to break the window when the mother came back to the care, according to police.
The mother told police that she was inside the nearby TJ MAXX using the bathroom. It was not clear how long the child was left in the car. The mother was arrested and charged with child endangerment.
Police say that the baby is in good health and is expected to be OK.
News 12 New Jersey caught up with the mother, father and baby after the mother was released from the Secaucus Police Station. The family declined to comment on the situation.
