A woman driving on a Monmouth County highway was shot and killed Thursday night when someone in another car opened fire on her vehicle.
Monmouth County prosecutors say they have charged 34-year-old Kadar Mustafa with murder for the killing of 24-year-old Sciasia Calhoun.
First Assistant Prosecutor Lori Linskey says that Mustafa was arrested on Oakland Mills Road in Manalapan just after 8 a.m. Friday. He was inside his vehicle at the time.
Authorities say Mustafa shot at Calhoun’s vehicle while she was traveling along Route 33 in Freehold Township. Calhoun was driving on an off-ramp when the shooting occurred around 11:45 p.m. Thursday. Calhoun's boyfriend and a 1-year-old child were also in the vehicle at the time but were not injured.
Calhoun was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later.
Linskey says that investigators do not believe that there is a connection between Calhoun’s death and the shooting death of Earl Sanders on April 29. Sanders was driving on Route 18 in Colts Neck when he was shot while driving.
But Linskey says that investigators are still waiting on ballistics testing to determine if there is a connection to a shooting on April 27 in Neptune and a shooting on April 28 in Holmdel. No one was injured in either of those shootings.
Linskey says that there does not seem to be any danger to the public at this time. She also says that there is no information that the shooting is linked to terrorism.
Mustafa faces murder, attempted murder and weapons charges.
Anyone who may have any information on any of the shootings is asked to contact the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 800-533-7443 or the Freehold Police Department at 732-462-7500. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Monmouth County Crime Stoppers at 800-671-4400.
