One Fairfield University professor nixed the traditional final exam this semester and let students step out of the classroom and have an open debate on gun violence.

"It's such an important issue that everyone is talking about," says Kim Oliver, who teaches the social welfare class. "They're inheriting the country, and it's really up to them to make the world a better place."

So she let her students, who aim to be future leaders in the real world, advocate for the changes they believe in.

Their event, called Stop Gun Violence Now, included guest speakers and gun-safety information.

Some of the students say they're riding the momentum of the students who survived a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

"We think we're so young, but we're the change," says student Sally Doherty. "That's our generation."
