Nearly 200 Westport teachers packed a Board of Education meeting Monday night wearing red to protest layoff notices send to 90 non-tenured teachers last week.

The Board of Finance reportedly voted to cut $2 million from next school year's education budget.

According to Westport Now, joining the state health plan could have saved the district $1.3 million. But News 12 is told negotiations broke down, after which Superintendent Colleen Palmer sent the layoff notices.

Palmer says the layoff notices were required, but that not all 90 teachers would lose their jobs.

After four hours of discussion, the board reportedly voted to ask for a $1.5 million restoration from the Board of Finance, which is meeting Wednesday.
