Edgewater to honor good Samaritans who rescued girls from fire

Posted: Updated:

Edgewater officials will be honoring two good Samaritans who rescued two young girls from a building fire earlier this month.

Business owner Tony Nehmi and Edgewater Police Sgt. James Dalton will be given a commendation after they climbed up a wall to help free the two girls who were trapped in their dance studio.

"I feel so good about saving these two girls’ lives and they didn't get hurt,” Nehmi says.

Nehmi owns Edgewater Wine and Spirits. He says that he was in his story when he spotted the smoke from the fire. He says that he jumped into his car and headed to the building to see if he could help.

Many of the girls in the dance studio on the second floor of the building were climbing down ladders to get out of danger. Nehmi says this is when he and Sgt. Dalton noticed the girls trapped.

"I look up there I saw two girls right in the middle of that window,” Nehmi says. “I get the idea to just get the ladder to break the window.  And that's what I did."

The building housed an auto body, restaurant and dance studio, all of which were destroyed.

Nehmi says that a few days after the fire one of the girls he rescued came into his shop with her parents and gave him a card.

"Look how beautiful this is,” he says. "Thank you for saving me and my friend lives. God bless you and your family.  From Caroline."

Nehmi and Dalton will be recognized by the Freeholders in Hackensack Wednesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials have ruled out arson.
