BAYONNE -

A water search is underway off the coast of Virginia after witnesses say a young man went overboard from a New Jersey-based cruise ship.

News 12 is told that the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Anthem of the Seas is based out of Bayonne and was due to arrive Saturday at 6 a.m.

The ship was returning from a trip to the Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean has released a statement that reads, “We are sorry to report that a guest on board Anthem of the Seas was observed intentionally going overboard while the ship was en route to Cape Liberty, New Jersey.”

The incident took place just after 4 p.m. The ship immediately began a search for the guest and notified the Coast Guard.

The guest was identified as a 24-year-old male from the United States.

Passengers on another ship nearby report that their captain also turned around to help in the search.

Further details surrounding the incident were not immediately available.
