Battle brews over planned power plant in Hudson County

Posted: Updated:
NORTH BERGEN -

A battle is brewing in New Jersey over a power plant in Hudson County.

The facility, which would be powered by natural gas and cost $1.5 billion, would go up in the Meadowlands in North Bergen along Bellman’s Creek.

Supporters claim the plant could create a tax windfall for the township.

“The project would create a substantial amount of tax revenue for the township and do it in a way that has no impact on residential neighborhoods," says North Bergen spokesperson Phil Swibinski.

Opponents claim the plant pushes back efforts to restore the Meadowlands at a time when the focus should be on renewable energy.

The plant would provide electricity to more than a million New Yorkers and is projected to create more than 2,000 construction jobs if it is allowed to go through.

The state needs to grant approval before any building can begin.
