NEWARK -

The Florida Panther’s defeat of the Nashville Predators Tuesday night kept the New Jersey Devils from clinching a spot in the NHL playoffs – for now.

The Devils will still have two more shots to earn a wild-card spot before the season ends on Sunday. A Florida loss in any of their last three games will also allow the Devils to advance to the playoffs.

The Devils defeated the New York Rangers Tuesday night with a score of 5-2. Two of those goals were scored within opening minutes of the first period.

MVP candidate Taylor Hall scored two goals, including one on a penalty shot. He also tallied two assists, putting him just three points behind Devils’ all-time single season points leader Patrik Elias, who has 96.

Fans chant “MVP” whenever Hall is on the ice. Hall was traded from the Edmonton Oilers in 2016.

“It’s been a lot of fun to come and play in front of this crowd. It feels like they really embraced me as a player,” Hall said. “That’s something you’ll remember all your life, is being on the bench after a goal and hearing MVP chants.”

Fan appreciation night will be held at the Devils final home game on Thursday.

This is the first time that the Rangers have not made the playoffs in eight year.
