Ocean County law enforcement officers will be cracking down on distracted drivers in April.
Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy says that dispatchers at the 911 call center get several reports a day about drivers who are texting or talking on a phone.
He says that children are often the best reminder not to text and drive.
“What I see a lot…is the younger generation…be it the grandkids or young children will tell their parents or grandparents, ‘Hey, you better put that down,’” Mastronardy says.
The sheriff says that about eight deaths occur a day nationally as a result of distracted driving.
News 12 New Jersey previously reported that Monmouth County officials were also cracking down on distracted drivers.
Distracted Driving Awareness Month runs through April 21.
