Bayonne redevelopment plans promise to bring thousands of jobs

State lawmakers gathered together to announce redevelopment plans happening in Bayonne, promising to bring thousands of jobs.
Bayonne's military port terminal, the MOTBY, closed nearly 20 years ago.
Since the big man-made pier was given over to the city, redevelopment has been promised, but sometimes it's been sluggish.
It’s kicking into high gear now, and officials announced the new project will create 90 acres of industrial space and create 2,700 jobs.
“This is going to bring jobs,” says Mayor Jimmy Davis. “The best thing a mayor can do for his residents is to bring local jobs for them to work.”
Condos are up and a new ferry terminal into NYC was announced last week.
A 90-acre stretch of the MOTBY will have its old warehouses demolished and four new ones built in their place, creating 1.6 million-square feet of storage space.
Officials, including both of the state's two US senators, hailed the project earlier.
The project will not be easy; the warehouses were built just before World War II with the belief they would need to hold up under fire from battleships or bombers, so they are reinforced, with 30-foot thick concrete in places.
Environmental regulations put in place after Hurricane Sandy mean the grade needs to be raised six feet, which means two million tons of fill dirt.
