The head of the Newark division of the FBI will be retiring after 22 years with the agency.
Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher has been running the Newark field office since 2016.
Gallagher says that he had only held the head position for six months when the agency became involved in one of latest terror cases in the state in years –investigating bombings at a Marine charity race in Ocean County and in Manhattan.
“The [Ahmad] Rahimi investigation is pretty much as complex as it gets,” Gallagher says.
Rahimi, of Elizabeth, was captured three days after the bombings, following a shootout with Linden police.
“It was a proud day in law enforcement. We had here in this building over 200 folks working the case,” says Gallagher.
Rahimi was later found guilty by a Manhattan jury and sentenced to life in prison.
Gallagher says that this was one of the biggest cases of his career.
He began his career as an agent in Canton, Ohio, and ends it as the head of the nation’s seventh-largest field office. Gallagher oversees a staff of 700 employees, half of whom are agents.
He says that investigating fraud and financial cases are important to him.
“That's the one thing about financial crimes that makes me so passionate about it. It's like everybody's a victim of it,” he says.
Gallagher says that he will continue to investigate cyber and financial crimes for a private security firm.
The FBI has not yet named Gallagher’s replacement.
