EDISON -

A Jewish holiday decoration caused concern for some New Jersey residents.

Several worried residents sent News 12 New Jersey a photograph that showed a dummy hanging from the window of a yeshiva on Woodbridge Avenue in Edison.

The school’s rabbi told News 12 over the phone that the dummy was placed outside the window by the students without any adults’ knowledge. The dummy was taken down a short time later when adults found out.

The rabbi called the incident “horseplay” and said that it was part of their Purim celebrations. Purim is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the defeat of Haman, who tried to destroy Jews in Persia.  The doll in the picture represented Haman, who was hanged by the king after being defeated.

Children are encouraged to wear costumes during the celebration. Purim ends on Thursday.

School officials declined News 12’s request for an on-camera interview.
