Scout troops welcome new members, expect more girls to enroll

Posted: Updated:
OGDENSBURG -

Six girls made history last month by being the first in New Jersey to join the Boy Scouts, as part of the organization's bid to include all children.

Earlier this year the Randolph Cub Scout troop was the first in the state to have girls join. News 12 New Jersey tagged along Saturday for an outing at the Sterling Hill Mine in Sussex County.

Some of the new members started as Girl Scouts who either had brothers who were Boy Scouts, or who simply wanted to expand their horizons.

Scout Brenna Regan notes that there are "some things you aren't allowed to do in Girls Scouts that you're allowed to do in Boy Scouts" that she's always wanted to try, like archery.

Since this troop first included girls in January, four others in Northern New Jersey have followed suit, for a total of 20 girls in the Scouts so far in the state.

The leaders of the Cub Scout pack say they're impressed with the girls' enrollment, and expect the rate of girls in the Cub Scouts to increase even more with the beginning of the new school year in September.
