Police arrest suspect in rash of Nassau burglaries

Police say a man has been arrested for a rash of burglaries targeting businesses in Nassau County over the course of nearly a year.
Detectives say 58-year-old Michael Matthews, of Westbury, is accused in 19 burglaries in 2017 and 2018. Investigators say he would gain entry to businesses by breaking glass doors and then grab cash.
The burglaries were carried out in Westbury, Carle Place, Garden City, Mineola, Hempstead and West Hempstead, according to police. Among the affected businesses were delis, bakeries, a pizzeria, a sushi restaurant and other shops and small businesses.
Police say the burglaries linked to Matthews date back to last March and continued through this month. The most recent was at a sandwich shop in Westbury on Wednesday, police say.
Matthews was arrested at his home on Friday. He is facing multiple counts of third-degree burglary, according to police.
