Patchogue seeks fundraising help to fix Civil War monument

A crumbling Civil War monument on Baker Street in Patchogue may get reinforcement, if some officials get their way — and the funds to help.
As it stands, the statue is cracking and propped up with a ladder. Some names of the Long Islanders who risked their lives during the war do not appear where they should.
Tom Badamo, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, says local residents fought, and some died, for the North in the war.
"I just don't think that should be forgotten," he says.
The fix involves sending the statue to Ohio for repairs, and Patchogue officials say they don't have enough money to do that.
Officials say their fundraising efforts so far have garnered about half of the $60,000 they need to restore the statue.
