Traffic on Interstate 95 leads to over $1 billion in lost revenue annually, according to a new study, and the governor is proposing some changes to the massive highway.

Gov. Dannel Malloy presented the results for the study on widening I-95 Thursday.

The estimated $2.5 billion project would increase the highway’s width on the southbound side from Stamford to the state line, and northbound from Stamford to Bridgeport.

There are also plans for changes in the eastern part of the state as well.

In order to help fund such a plan, ideas like raising the gas tax or bringing back tolls have been discussed.

Malloy says traffic on I-95 costs $1.2 billion in lost productivity and 54 million hours in delays on an annual basis.
