An off-duty New Jersey state trooper saved a baby from choking over the weekend.
State police said Trooper Robert Meyer was asleep around 1:15 a.m. Saturday after working a night shift when his neighbor knocked on his door. He said he opened his door to find his neighbor seeking help for her 2-week-old granddaughter, who was choking. Officials said she knocked on his door after seeing a marked trooper car parked outside Meyer’s home.
Without putting on a pair of shoes, Meyer immediately went to his neighbor’s home, which was four houses away, authorities said. Meyer found the baby blue and struggling to breathe.
Using a bulb syringe the grandmother gave him, Meyer cleared the baby’s nose and mouth, which immediately cleared her airway of mucus that was obstructing her breathing, officials said.
Piscataway police and local emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after to assist.
The baby was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released the same day. She suffered no serious injuries, and she is expected to make a full recovery, state police said.
