Some New Jersey lawmakers want to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes in the state.
Supporters of the bill say that the product’s cooling agent makes them more appealing to first-time smokers, which could lead to them becoming addicted. The bill would also apply to clove cigarettes.
Current state law prohibits the sale of tobacco products with any flavor other than tobacco, clove or menthol. Vendors who sold the product would face a fine.
A similar ban is already in place in San Francisco.
New Jersey would be the first state to ban menthol cigarettes if the bill was passed.
