Officers receive training to treat K-9 drug overdoses

Police officers in Mercer County received special training Tuesday for recognizing and treating a K-9 drug overdose.
The Overdose Prevention Agency Corporation, known as TOPAC, along with NorthStar Vets, teamed up with K-9 law enforcement officers to show them what to look for in case their police dogs suffer an accidental overdose.
“They can have anything from stumbling and weakness to disorientation, small pupils and, in severe cases, they can have problems breathing,” said Barbara Maton, of NorthStar Vets Critical Care.
Officers were given kits that included naloxone, which is administered to K-9s in the same manner it is to humans.
The program is funded completely from donations.
