NUTLEY -

A woman is now recovering in the hospital after her car crashed into the Third River in Nutley Thursday afternoon.

Nutley police say that the woman was in the CVS parking lot on Harrison Street and accidently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. She crashed into a parked car and through a gate, sending both cars into the river, according to police.

Nutley police officers were able to get down into the river and pulled the woman out.

Neighbor Nick Williams said that the rescuers performed CPR on the woman until emergency crews arrived.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. The extent of her injuries was not immediately known.

The people who rescued the woman refused medical treatment.

Both cars have since been pulled out of the river.
