The bitterly cold temperatures and snow contributed to hourlong delays on some LIRR lines Friday, leaving passengers cold and frustrated.
The LIRR said it had crews out all night and during the day working to keep the rails clear and switches from freezing up. There were several train cancellations during the morning rush, and service on part of the Ronkonkoma branch was replaced with bus service because of massive snowdrifts out east.
The LIRR reported Friday afternoon that trains were running on or close to schedule, but delays and cancellations were experienced again in the evening due to lingering effects of the blizzard.
All over, commuters were hoping to just get on a train. Some cars were packed, standing room only, when they arrived.
While some people braved the single-digit temperatures, others found space inside station waiting rooms. The railroad said it would be keeping station lobbies and waiting rooms open 24 hours a day while the deep freeze settles in across the region.
Even with the frigid conditions, News 12 Long Island found LIRR riders keeping positive attitudes.
"If you get negative, it's not gonna make you any warmer," said Rob Collins, of Albertson.
