Residents warned to stay off frozen bodies of water

Although temperatures around the Garden State have been below freezing lately, experts are warning residents to stay off frozen bodies of water.
Parts of Sunset Lake in Asbury Park were frozen over, but it only took a little bit of pressure to break through the ice.
Officials with the Asbury Park Office of Emergency Management say that they are trained and equipped to make ice rescues. But they say that the best way to stay safe is to avoid venturing out on to the ice.
“There are spots around the lake which have springs and are prone to thinner ice in those areas,” says OEM Coordinator Garret Giberson. “Basically the message is, ‘Stay off the ice.’”
Temperatures are not expected to be above freezing in New Jersey until the first week of January.
