Death of 8-year-old Newark girl deemed ‘suspicious’

The death of an 8-year-old girl in Newark over the weekend has been deemed “suspicious” by authorities.
Emergency crews were called to the child’s home on the 1,000 block of South Orange Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Sunday for reports of an unresponsive child. Officials say that the girl was pronounced dead at University Hospital less than an hour later.
The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine how the girl died.
Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that they were stunned by the news of the death.
“I was literally in tears.  My heart was broken,” says neighbor Fatimah Mayse. “I don't know what happened but I know it's scary because you don't know what happened to her."
Police did not release many details about the situation inside the girl’s home. But investigators were back at the house Monday collecting evidence.
A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tells News 12, "The investigation is continuing.  There are several aspects of this investigation."
The child’s name has not been released.
