A neighborhood Christmas light display has grown so big that the organizers were forced to cancel it due to the size of the crowds.

Wall Township resident Brian Brateris started the backyard display with his brother Dan on Woolley Drive about 10 years ago while home on college break. It grew to be one of the largest and most prominent displays in the entire state. People have traveled from as far away as New Mexico just to see it.

“It’s been every Christmas of my adult life the last 10 years,” says Brateris.

The display usually lasted for three nights a year and raised tens of thousands of dollars for the RallyCap Sports charity, an organization benefiting special-needs children.

But some neighbors complained, and Wall Township police said that they weren’t able to safely control the crowds. The decision was made to cancel the show this year.

“I understand it’s for charity, but to do it in a residential neighborhood, it’s not right,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Wall Township officials did offer the usage of their wide-open and expansive soccer fields for the display. They said Brateris could even hang the lights off the ball backstops. But the show’s creators say that the area is not feasible because there's too much equipment already hardwired into the home.

Publicity director Nancy Collins says that she hopes to sit down with Wall Township officials soon to work out something for 2018.
