Newark hospital workers call for more security after nurse stabbed

Union leaders are calling for increased security at University Hospital after a nurse was stabbed Sunday in the employee parking lot.

Union leaders, fellow nurses and University Hospital employees stood at the corner of 12th Avenue and Bergen Street Tuesday night to honor their injured co-worker and call for increased security.

Officials said the 60-year-old nurse was walking to her car after finishing a 12-hour shift. The suspect approached her, asked for money and then stabbed her in the stomach while she was in the employee parking lot.

"We are lifting up the family of our comrade. We are lifting up everyone that's here,” said HPAE Local 5089 member Cynthia McDougal.

Other union leaders asked for more police patrols and escorts for workers at the hospital to prevent something like this from happening again.

“It's very unsettling when you work and you cannot return home safely. So we need this resolved immediately,” one leader said.

The nurse, whose name has not been released, was able to go back into the hospital after the stabbing to get help. She had surgery and is said to be in stable condition.

Family members did not wish to speak to the media, but they say that the victim has been a nurse for 25 years and worked in the Labor and Delivery Department at the hospital.

Union leaders met with hospital management Tuesday to discuss a possible increase in security.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is urged to call Rutgers University police.
