A man who allegedly shot at an off-duty Newark police officer is facing charges.
Newark police say that 19-year-old Justin McGriff and another man attempted to rob the officer around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 100 block of Wainwright Street.
When the victim identified himself as a police officer, one of the men fired a weapon. The off-duty officer returned fire, hitting McGriff. He was taken to University Hospital for treatment.
The second man fled the scene and remains at large. The police officer was not injured, officials said.
McGriff was charged with robbery and weapons offenses.
Anyone who may have additional information about the crime is asked to contact police.
