A fire engulfed two homes early Tuesday morning in East Orange, damaging both.
Officials said the fire began in a house in the 100 block of Hollywood Avenue and quickly spread to a second home.
Neighbors said they could see flames shooting through the roof of the home where the fire originated.
“I heard a fire noise, so I got up. I saw the house was blazing. It looked scary before, so I got all my clothes and stuff. It was a scary thing at first,” witness Keith Martin said.
Neighbors told News 12 New Jersey that the home where the fire started has been abandoned for about a year.
A family of five who lived in the second home was displaced. The Red Cross was provided them assistance.
Officials said two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but were both treated and released.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
