An off-duty Jersey City police officer shot and killed two men who were trying to rob him, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says.
Officials say that the unidentified officer was dropping off an acquaintance and two children when they were confronted by the two men, identified as 19-year-old Dante Holden and 21-year-old Tymyr Wilson, both of East Orange. Authorities say that both men were armed and that one of them tried to shoot at the officer, but his gun jammed.
The officer shot and killed both suspects. The incident happened on the 100 block of South Sixth Street in Newark.
"We are thankful that our detective, who was a victim of an attempted armed robbery, is OK and want to thank the Newark Police Department and the Essex County prosecutor for their assistance in this ongoing investigation," Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said in a statement.
Officials say that neither the officer nor the people he was with were injured.
