Former Brick employee admits to stealing thousands

A former Brick Township employee has admitted to stealing thousands of dollars in insurance claims.
Officials say that Kim Bogan pleaded guilty Tuesday to submitting fraudulent insurance claims totaling $941,354.77. The claims were payment for chiropractic services by Bogan’s brother, Dr. Glenn Scarpelli, for services that were never in fact provided, according to officials.
Bogan admitted to the fraud between January 2011 and April 2017 while she worked at the township’s Building Department. She was fired when the township discovered the theft.
“The next step is getting back the stolen money. We will take every legal action available to recoup these funds,” Brick Township Mayor John Ducey said in a statement.
Ducey said that Bogan is the daughter of former Mayor Joseph Scarpelli, who was imprisoned for accepting bribes while mayor.
Bogan is expected to be sentenced on Jan. 2, 2018. She will be required to pay back the money that she stole. The state is recommending a five-year sentence as part of the plea agreement.
