State officials are warning parents to be on the lookout for marijuana edibles in their children’s trick-or-treat candy this Halloween.
The state Health Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office say there has been an increase in marijuana edibles that look like everyday candy, such as gummy bears or hard chocolate.
The word “candy” is not allowed on edible marijuana packaging, and manufacturing edibles in shapes that are appealing to children is also banned.
Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Al Della Fave says that there is no specific threat that anyone is planning on handing out tainted candy this Halloween, but he tells News 12 New Jersey that in today’s climate it is best to be prepared.
“We’d be remiss if we didn't take this opportunity to make that warning,” he says. “God forbid something happened, they’d say ‘Why didn’t you educate us that this product exists?’”
Officials say that sometimes the edible marijuana is disguised to look like real candy wrappers. Health officials say that the candy can have an odor similar to that of the marijuana plant, making it easier to identify.
Della Fave says that parents should make sure the labels are correct on the candy, and anything unmarked should be thrown out.
