New Jersey is adding another $75 million to its program to buy and demolish homes in flood-prone areas, Gov. Chris Christie announced Monday.
The state is adding the money to its Blue Acres program. The program is designed to buy and knock down homes in areas that flood repeatedly.
Christie made Monday's announcement in Keansburg. The Raritan Bay community suffered damage from Sandy in October 2012.
Homeowners given the buyout will receive money to purchase new homes outside of flood areas.
“To give them peace of mind when they move into that home that they will not be dealt with the same type of bad hand,” Christie said.
Keansburg resident Frank Wood is one of the homeowners taking the buyout. His home is on Creek Road, which was never the same after the storm.
“It was a good little house. A great little house on the water,” Wood says.
Wood tells News 12 New Jersey that he is sad to leave, but that now he can move on.
Once the houses are demolished, the land must remain undeveloped, so that homes will never again be at risk of costly flood damage.
Of the 689 homes bought under the program, none have been along the ocean. Instead, many have been along rivers and bays, which also have suffered flood damage.
Of the nearly 900 purchase offers made as of Monday, 610 acquisitions have closed and 475 homes have been demolished.
More information about the Blue Acres Program can be found on the state’s website.
