Gov. Chris Christie is endorsing the city of Newark’s bid to win Amazon's competition for a second headquarters.
Christie endorsed Newark on Monday alongside U.S. Sen. Cory Booker. The governor said that the state and city are planning nearly $7 billion in tax breaks and that it would amount to one of the most successful ventures in the history of both New Jersey and Amazon.
Amazon says its second headquarters would bring 50,000 jobs along with it. Christie has previously estimated the headquarters could generate up to $9 billion in economic activity.
“More job-creating incentive programs are a proven success for New Jerseyans and New Jersey businesses,” Christie said, “Amazon just flat out works and makes sense in New Jersey in particular, with its thriving regional distribution centers here already, over 13,000 Amazon employees already work here in the state of New Jersey.”
Christie and the state Legislature last month unveiled up to $5 billion in tax incentives to attract Amazon.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, endorsed the plan. Democrat Phil Murphy has said he wants to attract Amazon but hasn't explicitly backed the state tax credits.
The deadline to submit proposals is Thursday.
