The third annual Paterson Red Mass was held Tuesday to honor fallen firefighters.
Dozens of firefighters and their families gathered at St. Gerard’s Church for the event, which began in 2015. Firefighters say that the Mass is a way to honor those in New Jersey and nationwide who died in the line of duty.
Paterson Fire Chief Michael Postorino says that it is a solemn ceremony but one that always helps him to remember his purpose.
"It's a tough time because we have to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and we have to make sure that we don't forget what it is that they did for the residents that they serve,” the chief says. “It's important that we don't forget, but it is a tough time to go through every year."
More than two dozen recruits also attended the Mass.
The Red Mass is held every October. A Blue Mass to honor fallen police officers is held in May.
