The city of Newark is poised to hold a major donation drive for victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
New Jersey’s largest city is said to have the largest population of Puerto Ricans in the state. The island was devastated after the storm moved through the area.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, the Newark City Council and other elected officials from around New Jersey gathered at City Hall to announce a coalition that hopes to raise $100,000 for the victims.
“These days are difficult. I’m waiting for my sister’s call,” says Newark Councilman Luis Quintana.
"The focus now is on rescue and saving lives. And the next phase of focus is about sustaining lives,” Councilman Anibal Ramos says.
Members of the coalition detailed the plans to raise money. They include a benefit concert, donation drive and a fundraiser for the American Red Cross - scheduled for early next month. The money will go directly to the victims of the storm.
“The storm has destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses, schools, hospitals…not only in Puerto Rico but also the Virgin Islands,” says NJ American Red Cross CEO Ana Montero.
The free benefit concert and donation drive will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at 870 Mount Prospect Avenue in Newark. A fundraiser to benefit the American Red Cross will be held at Flamboyan Manor in Newark from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, Gov. Chris Christie says that New Jersey residents can now call a toll-free hotline to search for friends and loved ones affected by the hurricane. People can also call to volunteer or to donate to the relief effort. The toll-free number is 833-NJ-HELPS (833-654-3577).
