Shaq backs Democrat Phil Murphy for governor

NEWARK -

New Jersey native and former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal has endorsed Democrat Phil Murphy to be New Jersey’s next governor.

O’Neal and Murphy appeared at a fundraiser event in Newark Monday.

O’Neal previously endorsed Republican Gov. Chris Christie during the governor’s 2013 re-election campaign, calling the governor a "great man." He also appeared in an ad for Christie.

Republican candidate Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno met with voters in Morristown Monday.  She took to Twitter to criticize Murphy.

"The only promise Phil Murphy intends on keeping is raising taxes,” she posted, along with an attack advertisement.

Guadagno says that raising taxes will drive businesses out of New Jersey.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
