After 86 years and countless deaths at the George Washington Bridge, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will install a temporary fence to stop people from jumping to their deaths. 

The fence will be installed until it is replaced by a permanent 11-foot high pedestrian safety fence.

Starting Monday, the south sidewalk will close for three months while work is done.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the bridge's north sidewalk, which is typically closed to the public. 

Eventually, crews will also install a fence along the north sidewalk.

The project is expected to completed by the end of the year. 

There have been 74 deaths since 2013, according to Port Authority. Police have intervened and stopped 45 situations this year.
The safety upgrades are part of Port Authority's $1.9 billion "Restore the George" program.
