Officials at the Jersey Shore say they expect large crowds this weekend due to summer-like weather, but they are warning people to stay out of the ocean.
Temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to upper-80s this weekend in New Jersey. But the recent hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean have caused dangerous surf and rip currents to form.
Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty says that lifeguards will be on duty this weekend at Belmar beaches. But they will be used as a deterrent to keep people out of the water.
Four- to six-foot waves have been crashing up and down the Jersey Shore. It was enough to keep some beachgoers from going into the ocean Friday.
“I think that it’s very dangerous to go into the ocean,” says beachgoer Amanda Zaslow. “I do expect a lot of people here, so I think there should be lots of lifeguards.”
Two people were caught in rip currents at an Asbury Park beach Wednesday. They were pulled to shore, but a 42-year-old woman did not survive.
Asbury Park Office of Emergency Management coordinator Garrett Giberson says that he expects crowds equaling a summer weekend and says that he fears some folks may not get the message.
“Stay the hell out of the water…It’s dangerous, it’s treacherous and you’re going to drown,” he says. “Lifeguards are off duty. Do not go in the water.”
News 12 New Jersey spoke with beach coordinators all across the Jersey Shore and most had the same sentiments. They say people should come to the beach and enjoy the sun and sand, but to stay out of the water.
The National Weather Service says that waves may increase in size by Sunday due to the effects of Hurricane Maria.
