Family says Holmdel HS lacrosse player died of undetected heart defect

A Holmdel High School lacrosse player who died suddenly over the weekend had an undetected heart condition, his family has revealed.
A letter from Jack Dowd’s parents said the teenager died from an undiagnosed congenital heart condition.
“Jack had a medical condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). It is a congenital condition and often the cause of sudden death in young people, specifically young athletes,” read the letter posted Wednesday on TAPinto. “There was no way for us to know that Jack suffered from this, and it was not something we would have ever tested for in his yearly checkups.”
Dowd was at lacrosse practice last weekend when he collapsed.
The 16-year-old's father, Sean Dowd, is a teacher at Holmdel High School.
