The American Academy of Pediatrics has released its first clinical report on tattoos and body piercings.

The group says that young people need to carefully consider the consequences and potential risks of body modification. The say that the risks and consequences may be medical, such as infections, or social, such as the chances of getting employed.

The AAP offers guidance for pediatricians on how to distinguish typical body modifications from more dramatic or intense efforts to harm oneself.
