People across the state of New Jersey have continued to help and donate to Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
The community of Belmar raised $56,000 over the Labor Day weekend holiday. Officials say that $41,000 of those donations were collected on the town’s boardwalks. Local businesses donated the rest.
Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty says that he is going to travel to Rockport, Texas, personally to deliver the donations.
“We have more commitments coming in [Wednesday] and Thursday,” Doherty says. “Before I leave for Texas Friday we should have a substantial amount of money to present to the mayor.”
Rockport felt the brunt of the storm. The town is similar in size to Belmar, and Doherty says that he wanted to help out the small community as a way to repay those who helped Belmar after Superstorm Sandy.
The Bergen County Police Benevolent Association is also doing its part to help the people of Texas.
The PBA, along with Rep. Josh Gottheimer, kicked off a charity drive Tuesday at the Paramus Police Department headquarters. The PBA will provide supplies and other necessary emergency disaster relief for officers and first responders in Texas.
“[First responders] need our help. So instead of us going down there and causing more problems to shelter us and feed us…we can help them out with monetary donations and help with whatever equipment they may need to be successful,” says Bergen County PBA Trustee Francis O'Rourke.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the cause can do so HERE.
